We took part in the gorilla naming ceremony in Rwanda
A symbolic gesture alongside our sponsor, Visit Rwanda, bringing together figures from across the world to raise international awareness of the protection of this endangered species.

Atlético de Madrid was present at the 20th edition of Kwita Izina, the iconic gorilla naming ceremony held each year in Rwanda. This year’s event took place on Friday 5 September at the foot of Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi, one of the regions most recognised for its work in biodiversity conservation.
Visit Rwanda, a sponsor of the club, invited us to take part in this important occasion, which was attended by global leaders, artists and other football figures. Representing the club was Atlético legend Luis García. During the ceremony, 40 mountain gorilla infants born in 2023 and 2024 were given names in a symbolic act reinforcing the commitment to protecting this endangered species. We had the honour of naming one gorilla Iraba, meaning “adornment”.

Kwita Izina not only celebrates the life of these primates, but also highlights the vital role of local communities, rangers, trackers and veterinary experts in preserving Rwanda’s natural environment. Atlético de Madrid’s presence reflects our support for global environmental causes and for projects that promote sustainable development.
Through this participation, we continue to strengthen our commitment beyond the pitch, backing initiatives such as those led by our sponsor Visit Rwanda, aimed at ecological awareness and international cooperation.
