Atlético de Madrid Escudo Atlético de Madrid

The ‘rojiblancos’ believe that Agüero’s goal came too late to come back

Kun: “We tried, but Casillas made some key saves”

The ‘rojiblanco’ players believe that if the goal had come earlier, Atlético de Madrid could have at least gotten a draw. Mario Suárez, Agüero and Domínguez were those in charge of appearing before the media and all shared the idea that the goal came too late.

Mario Suárez commented that “they scored two quick goals on us, but we had chances and I think that we played well, but they have a great goalkeeper who saved lots of shots and made the game really tough on us. Our pair of strikers can stand right alongside theirs, but their keeper played very well and once again showed that he’s the best in the world. We scored our goal very late; if it had come earlier things would have been different. Our supporters were spectacular.”

Sergio Agüero was the author of the goal that gave a glimmer of hope to the ‘rojiblanco’ fans, although Kun himself said that “the goal came really late. At least we tried, but Madrid is a great team that is fighting for La Liga and it’s tough. They don’t miss up front. We tried but Casillas made some crucial saves. When we scored our goal Madrid got nervous because a tie wasn’t going to help them, but we only had three more minutes and it’s tough to level in that time. We did all we could to equalize but were unable to. Now we have to fix our mistakes for the next contest. We always want to win, and even more so against Madrid, who we haven’t defeated in 11 years. There’s nothing you can do; we have to move forward. We can still qualify for the Europa League and try to earn points, which is the most important thing.”

Kun Agüero had words of praise for the ‘rojiblanco’ followers. “Atleti’s fans always cheer until the end, and today they showed it. We regret the result but we’re very happy with our supporters. We’re all going home bitter. The only thing I can say to them is for them to keep believing in us because we’re going to do everything we can to qualify for Europe for next season.”

Álvaro Domínguez
also lamented the loss. “It wasn’t meant to be. We tried, but it was tough. We knew that they were a very complicated opponent but we stood up to them, had our chances and deserved more than one or two goals. That was the difference. To beat a team of this calibre you need to have an exceptional day. We’re puzzled by this streak because no matter how the matches go we can’t seem to beat them and we end up leaving the same as always. Small details influence a match. We put plays together and this is football and everything counts. Offsides, yellow cards, and always in their favour. And in the end that affects the way you go into a challenge, a 50-50 ball, because you always come out on the short end and looking silly.”

He made a comment in defence of the back line. “Here they always blame things on the defence but we’re a team that defends 70 percent of the match and obviously our opponent has more chances to score if you’re defending with that percentage. We lean on that, on our counter-attacks, to exploit the speed of our players up top and that’s what happened. Casillas had his day and surely if he hadn’t been playing, this game would have been different.”
