Sergio Lionel Agüero announced on Wednesday morning his retirement from football. Our club, represented by Vice President Antonio Alonso and former captain Antonio López, accompanied the Argentine. The striker wore the Atleti shirt between 2006 and 2011 – making 234 appearances, scoring 101 goals and providing 45 assists.

Having joined our club in the summer of 2006, he made his Atlético de Madrid debut on Aug. 27 in a 1-0 win at Racing de Santander. Less than a month later, on Sep. 17, he netted his first goal in a 4-1 success against Athletic Club at San Mamés.

The Argentine won the Europa League with our club in the 2009/10 season – providing both assists for Diego Forlán in the final in Hamburg – and the 2010 UEFA Super Cup, where we beat Inter Milan 2-0 and Agüero provided a goal and an assist.

The striker spoke about his time at our club.

"I’m grateful to Atlético de Madrid, who came here today, and who believed in me when I was only 18 years old, believing that I could do well in Europe. The Europa League with Atlético was a very happy moment," Agüero said.

Thank you for the memories and best of luck, Sergio.
