PREVIEW | PSV EINDHOVEN VS ATLÉTICO DE MADRID

A tough fixture in Eindhoven

This Tuesday at 21:00 CEST, Atlético face the leaders of the Eredivisie, who they have never lost against in an official match.

Atlético wrap up their Champions League group-stage campaign this Tuesday with a visit to the Philips Stadion, where they will face PSV Eindhoven at 21:00 CEST in Matchday 6 of the league phase.

The Dutch side, current leaders of the Eredivisie, are enjoying a superb run of form, not only domestically but also on the European stage. After a 3–1 defeat in their opener against USG, Peter Bosz’s men have put together four positive results in Europe, earning away draws against Leverkusen and Olympiacos (1–1), as well as two emphatic wins: a 6–2 demolition of Napoli and a commanding 4–1 victory at Anfield against Liverpool in the previous matchday.

Those results have lifted PSV to 8 points in the standings, just one behind Atlético. Simeone's men sit on 9 points, just three shy of second place, after victories over Eintracht Frankfurt, USG and Inter.

Despite the challenge this fixture presents, the historical record is firmly in Atlético's favour. They have never lost to the Dutch club in any of the six official meetings between the sides. In the group stage of the 2008/09 and 2016/17 editions of the UEFA Champions League, Atlético recorded respective 3–0 (with an Agüero brace and a goal from Maniche) and 1–0 wins at the Philips Stadion (Saúl). At the Vicente Calderón, Atleti also prevailed 2–1 (Simao and Maxi Rodríguez) and 2–0 (Gameiro and Griezmann). In between, in the round of 16 in the 2015/16 campaign, both legs finished 0–0, with Atlético advancing to the quarter-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout.
