Official Statement

Atlético de Madrid reiterates its condemnation of the events that took place during the match against Real Madrid. Our club maintains a zero tolerance policy towards violence, persecuting any demonstration of this act and applying sanctions in line with our rules to any of those involved. Our collaboration with the authorities is permanent and, in this case, we have worked in partnership with the Police from the moment that these events took place to identify those involved, three people have been permanently expelled from being members of the club. Our security department continues working with the Police to identify the rest of those involved in the throwing of objects, and they will also be permanently expelled when they are found.

On the other hand, after reviewing the decision of the Comité de Competición of the Real Federación Española de Fútbol, in which the partial closure of the lower south stand (sectors 127 to 133), of our stadium for three matches, we consider the punishment to be disproportionate, which penalises a large number of fans who had nothing to do with the disruption and showed exemplary behaviour.

We think that the unacceptable behaviour of a minority does not justify the imposition of such a harsh punishment towards a majority who did nothing wrong. The biggest victim given the events is Atlético de Madrid and the fans and those supposedly responsible for those involved in the throwing of objects, those that actually must be punished and not the rest of the fans that have demonstrated good behaviour. For this reason, we are considering lodging an appeal against the decision to the Comité de Apelación.
