Goyo Manzano starts a new era at Atlético surrounded by ‘rojiblancos’

Vizcaíno y Rubén Baraja will be his right hand men

Gregorio Manzano will start preparations for his second spell in charge of Club Atletico de Madrid after his previous appointment in 2003/04.The Andalusian manager will undoubtedly apply  his all his knowledge, vision and hard work to the club as he begins his new era. He’ll be joined on this new adventure by two people with a strong ‘rojiblanco’ history, Juan Vizcaíno y Rubén Baraja. With Vizxaino taking on the role of assistant manager whilst Baraja will act as a second assistant.
Juan Vizcaíno, known by his sporting name of Vizcaino,  (Pobla de Mafumet, Tarragona, August 6th 1966) started his career with Gimnàstic de Tarragona. During The 1982/83 season he made his first team debut under Xavier Azkargorta where he played until in 1986 before making the switch to the Real Zaragoza reserve team, Deportivo Aragón. In the 87/88 season he stepped up to the first team, making his top flight debut on the 9th of May 1988 against Sevilla FC. He wore the Zaragoza shirt for three seasons before moving to Atlético de Madrid in the summer of 1990. During his eight seasons with the ‘rojiblancs’, he won 1 league title as well as 3 cup winners medals and was part of the famous double winning team.
He later moved on the play two more years in the premier division with Real Valladolid as well as one year in the second division with Elche C.F. before finally returning to Gimnastic de Tarragona when he ended his playing career in 2004.
Rubén Baraja started his career in 1993 with Valladolid where he spent two season moving between the first and second teams. He cemented his place in the first team in 1995 when he played 27 games, scoring one goal for the blanquivioletas. During that season he signed for Atlético de Madrid playing three seasons in the reserves before being promoted to the first team, largely down to his aerial strength, vision and long range shooting ability. He played in the Atlético de Madrid first team during the 1999/2000 season before being signed by Valencia CF.
It was with the Valencian Club where his career flourished, making his debut for the Spanish national team. In his first season he played in the European cup final before winning the league title the following year.  After Ronald Koeman decided to leave out captain Albelda, Rubén Baraja was given the armband where he went on to become an inspirational captain for the ‘Che’ side.
On Sunday 16th of May, Rubén Baraja said his farewells to the Valencia faithful in the Mestalla  when he played his final game against CD Tenerife in the last match of the 2009/10 season after Valencia CF had decided not to renew his contract. He now starts a new chapter in his career alongside Gregorio Manzano.
The rest of the Andalusian’s technical team is made up by Toni Servera, the fitness coach he worked with at Sevilla F.C. and Joan Mesquida will be the goalkeeper coach.
They will form the back room team which Manzano believes will bring success to the club in his second stint on the bench of Club Atletico de Madrid.
