García Pitarch to leave Atlético de Madrid on May 30
He will leave behind in the trophy room a Europa League and a Super Cup
Atlético de Madrid and Jesús García Pitarch have reached a mutual agreement not to extend his contract, which is set to expire on May 30 of this year. Therefore, the Sports Director of the Club from next to the Manzanares River will leave the organization after five years of intense work, following his arrival in the summer of 2006. During this time, the team made its return to European competitions such as Champions and Europa League.
In the 2007/2008 season, Atlético de Madrid returned to the UEFA Cup, and one season later the ‘rojiblancos’ made it back to Champions League, a feat they repeated in 2009/10, although in that season Atleti, after being knocked out of the biggest competition in Europe, took part in the first edition of the Europa League and won the title. In his last season (2010-11) as Sports Director, Jesús García Pitarch watched as the team that he helped put together compete in the Europa League once again the lift the European Super Cup against Inter Milan.
With the two trophies that shine in the case inside the Atlético Museum (UEFA Europa League and the European Super Cup) and the participation in the Copa del Rey final last year against Sevilla at Camp Nou, his work reached an apex.
At the end of May, Jesús García Pitarch will begin a new adventure in his career. Before holding this position at Club Atlético de Madrid, he had already held the same one at Valencia, where he took over for Javier Subirats in 2002 and remained until June 4, 2004. With Valencia he won one League title and one UEFA Cup.
Prior to that, he was the director of the Valencia Academy and, as a player, spent time at clubs such as Valencia, Espanyol, Figueras, Orihuela, Logroñés, Mérida, Villarreal and Murcia.
The ‘rojiblanco’ organization, on behalf of Mr. Enrique Cerezo (President), Mr. Miguel Ángel Gil Marín (Managing Director), and all Atlético supporters, would like to pass on their most sincere appreciation to Jesús García Pitarch for the work he did and the professionalism he showed during the seasons that he was at the Club.
