Caminero: 'This is the biggest challenge of my life and this Club deserves the best”

Aguilera: 'Milinko Pantic will be the manager of the reserve squad'

José Luis Pérez Caminero, in his first appearances as Sports Director of Atlético de Madrid, thanked the confidence of the ‘rojiblanco’ directors and assured that “it’s an indescribable day. I can promise that I’m going to work hard with excitement and desire. I’m proud to carry the ‘rojiblanco’ sentiment inside me and that forces me to do a little more. This is the biggest challenge of my life and the Club deserves the best.”

The new Sports Director analyzed the current state of the ‘rojiblanco’ team and said that “Agüero is still an Atlético player and my intention is for him to stay here. We’re counting on him until something changes. I want to speak with him, find out what he’s thinking, and from there we’ll make a decision, but as of today he’s an Atlético player and a player that we all want to have. With respect to De Gea, he continues to be an Atlético player and we’re counting on him.”

With respect to the manager who might sit on the Atlético de Madrid bench, Caminero explained that “it will be someone who keeps the academy in mind. Whoever it is will always keep in mind that the base of the squad has to come from our football academy, without renouncing the idea of brining in footballers from elsewhere who improve what we already have.”

The head of the athletic department continued to speak about the future coach and asserted that “I’m just getting settled and we have to assess the possibilities, but I know the profile that I want, one that puts a central focus on the academy. Everything will follow that line. The designated person will have to look at the reserves, but without giving up on brining in players who improve on what we have. There are several possibilities right now.”

Caminero continued to touch on his work at the ‘rojiblanco’ organization and pointed out that “the season just ended and a new challenge is underway. We have to plan well and get the best players, the best coaching staff. We want to put together a great team. From there, we’ll fight to be as high in the table as possible. The honor and class of the Club deserve to be near the top.”

To finish, the new Sports Director highlighted that “football is a worldwide phenomenon and there’s room for players of any nationality. The important thing is for them to have the football level to be able to play at a Club as grand as Atlético de Madrid.”

Carlos Aguilera is returning to his former home, as well. Seven years have passed since he hung up his boots and although he’s been away from the Club’s daily activities, he’s always kept up-to-date with everything that goes on at Atlético de Madrid. The new Director of the Football Academy spoke about his goal at the ‘rojiblanco’ organization and explained that “the important thing is for players from the academy to continue to make the jump to the first squad. During the season that just finished, the presence of young players in the team sheets was a constant, and we want that presence to increase. We’re going to design a model and from there work on having the largest number of academy players in the first team.”

Aguilera also had time to reveal the new head coach of the reserve squad. “It will be Milinko Pantic. He’s really excited to come. He wants to show that he’s a great manager. He’s an ‘atlético’ and is going to show his quality,” assured Aguilera.
