Atlético de Madrid break their drought at the Calderón by crushing Villarreal (3-1)

Reyes, Kun and Forlán are the Atlético goal-scorers

Atlético de Madrid got back on the winning path at the Vicente Calderón in the best way possible, by crushing Juan Carlos Garrido’s Villarreal. The ‘rojiblancos’ earned three extremely important points for their European goals against a direct rival. The goals from Reyes, Agüero and Forlán, all of them quite pretty, put the Atleti faithful on their feet as they enjoyed their team’s play to the fullest.

The Vicente Calderón was the scene of the duel between direct rivals. In recent seasons, both Atlético de Madrid and Villarreal have battled it out for European spots, which have become tougher and tougher to come by in recent years. The ‘rojiblancos’ came into the match enthusiastically after a week of hard work, as they knew it would be an important and decisive contest. With Perea out through suspension, Quique Sánchez Flores changed up the line-up in order to try and slow down the opposition.

In the opening minutes of the match, both teams shared ball control. Atlético de Madrid made it clear that they wanted to carry the weight of the match. The ‘rojiblancos’ needed just five minutes to take the lead on the scoresheet. José Antonio Reyes got the home bench and the entire stadium on their feet with a strong left-footed missile from long distance that curled into Diego López’s upper right corner..

With the lead on the scoreboard, Atlético de Madrid found the confidence necessary to continue to lay siege to Villarreal’s goal. The home side didn’t want to give up ground and Quique reordered the defence after the goal. Things couldn’t have started off bettr for the red-and-whites. Forlán tried his luck in the 9th minute of the encounter, but his shot went into the outer side netting. The Uruguayan wanted to score and made it known with that shot.

Garrido’s men were forced to push up their lines in an attempt to attack David De Gea’s goal. Villarreal were out of sorts, but only because Atlético de Madrid were able to maintain possession of the ball. After a nice chance from Mario Suárez from just outside the area, Villarreal began to close in on De Gea’s goal. Garrido’s lads didn’t want to let the points get away from them at the Calderón, and thus wanted to take full advantage of their chances, minimal as they were.

The prize came for the ‘amarillos’ in minute 34 of the match off a set piece. Cazorla tapped the ball forward and Rossi ripped a blistering left-footed strike that found the back of the net for the equalizer. With the score knotted up, Atlético de Madrid tried to intensify their attacks. Reyes, with two chances, threatened the Villarreal defence, but couldn’t find the reward. With little more on the pitch, the two teams went into the dressing rooms at the half. After the re-start, Quique’s men came out with renewed ideas.

Atlético were aware of the importance of earning the full points against Villarreal. The ‘rojiblancos’ were showing desire and that public acknowledged that. Twice, Forlán had chances to give them the lead, but Iturralde Gonzáles called off two attacks for offside. In the 59th minute, Kun Agüero had a nice chance on an Atlético counter-attack, but his left-footed shot went wide of the far post. Villarreal replied in the 64th minute from the boots of Cazorla, but De Gea wrapped up the Spanish international’s shot.

Diego Forlán wanted to break his scoring drought and did his best on two consecutive opportunities. He put Diego López to the test on both, as the goalkeeper had to make fine saves to keep the score level. Atlético were spurred on by their chances, while Villarreal didn’t let up either. The goal was coming and it came from the feet of Spanish-Argentine Kun Agüero. Filipe Luis put together a nice play that ended with the Atleti ‘10’ masterfully lifting the ball over an onrushing López for a 2-1 lead. But things didn’t end there. There was still time for Forlán to tally his goal, as the Uruguayan had searched hard all game long. Diego got on the end of a through ball from Reyes and beat Diego López with a subtle touch. Now up 3-1, Atlético were in great shape to give their supporters something to cheer about.

Quique Sánchez Flores didn’t stop giving directions to his lads. The manager from Madrid knew that winning three points at home against Villarreal, a direct rival, was more than important for his team’s European interests. Atlético played a great game with a solid attitude and lots of chances. The ‘colchonero’ players showed that they’re the same guys who won two titles last season and who will continue to battle until the end of league play.
