THE CLUB THANKS THE FANS FOR THEIR FLAWLESS BEHAVIOUR AGAINST BENFICA

An exemplary attitude

Leaders of the Club expressed to the UEFA delegate at the match our unease and concern for the launching of flares and other objects on our fans, a circumstance that was included in the report of the delegate.

Club Atlético de Madrid strongly condemns the regrettable incidents caused by a part of the rival fans, who threw various objects and several flares on the viewers located in the north stands of the Vicente Calderón stadium during the course of the Champions League match against Benfica. From the club, we censor any form of violence and condemn this kind of deplorable attitudes that go against any rivalry and the sporting spirit that should always prevail.

Atlético de Madrid wants to thank once again our fans for their impeccable attitude showed in the face of an incident that should not happen again in a sports stadium. Our followers censored the shameful behaviour of the fans who threw flares and other objects on a sector of the north stands.

Club members expressed our discomfort and concern to the UEFA delegate for the incidents caused by a part of the Benfica fans who endangered the integrity of several fans, and for the damage caused in various areas of the stadium facilities. The head of UEFA in this meeting included in his report the launch of flares from a section of the visiting fans on our fans located in the north stands and the vicinity of the playing field.

Our entity and the State Security Forces carried out the usual safety and prevention measures carried out in this type of matches, when the Portuguese fans seating in the upper and lower balcony of the north stands accessed the stadium. In these access controls, numerous flares and other forbidden items were confiscated.

For its part, Benfica, through its President Luís Filipe Vieira, regretted at the end of the match the behaviour of some of its fans that travelled to Madrid, and apologized to our club on behalf of those responsible for the incidents.
