Atlético de Madrid has reached an agreement for the acquisition of a license in the Canadian Premier League, which has increased the number of participating teams from seven to eight in its second edition and is to begin in April. The new team will be based in Ottawa, the country’s capital.
A delegation of Canadian Premier League representatives, consisting of David Clanachan (Commissioner of the CPL), Scott Mitchell (CEO of the CPL) and Doug Rye (CFO of the CPL) traveled to Madrid to close the deal at the Wanda Metropolitano, whereby Atlético de Madrid acquires a license to establish a team in the Canadian league. We will be assisted in this operation and in the development of the new Canadian club by Jeff Hunt, a well-known figure in the Canadian sports scene and shareholder of the Canadian Football League’s Ottawa Redblacks and the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Hockey League.
CPL Commissioner David Clanachan spoke positively about the project.
“We are thrilled to welcome Ottawa as the Canadian Premier League’s eighth club and Club Atlético de Madrid as our newest owners of the Ottawa club. We are very excited to launch the club with one of the world’s most iconic and successful soccer brands and look forward to them taking to the pitch for the 2020 CPL season,” Clanachan said.
Atlético de Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín was also pleased with the agreement.
“We are delighted to be part of such an exciting project in an amazing country. We would like to bring our expertise to a very strong and structured league and will work together with the CPL and the rest of the clubs to contribute to the growth of Canadian soccer. We want Ottawa soccer fans to be able to feel proud of belonging to the Atlético de Madrid family so we can start sharing our values with them,” Miguel Ángel Gil Marín said.
