OUR 6TH LALIGA TITLE

52 years of the league in Sabadell

On 19 April 1970, our team won at the Nova Creu Alta thanks to goals from Red & White legends Ufarte and Calleja, to win the sixth league title in our history.

On a day like today in 1970, our team won the sixth league in its history. The Red & Whites, coached by Marcel Domingo, beat Sabadell at La Nova Creu Alta in a thrilling match that ended up deciding the title in our favour.

Atleti took on Sabadell on the last matchday in the middle of the fight for the championship with Athletic Club. In order to win the title, our team had to win or equal the result of a team that received, at the same time for the first time in the history of LaLiga, Celta de Vigo at San Mamés.

For such an important match, the French coach Marcel Domingo opted for the following eleven: Rodri, Melo, Ovejero, Calleja, Adelardo, Martínez Jayo, Ufarte, Luis Aragonés, Gárate, Alberto and Salcedo; Irureta came on in the second half.

In front of a Red & White crowd of around 10.000 fans who travelled to Sabadell to cheer on our team, Marcel Domingo's men surrounded the Sabadell goal in search of a first goal that would bring them closer to the title. However, it wasn't until the 68th minute when Ufarte shot into the back of the goal defended by Comas to give our team a lead that was extended by Calleja, the captain, in the 85th minute.

The 0-2 final score sealed the title for Atleti and made Marcel Domingo the first professional in the club's history to win the league as coach and player. Our team, with his triumph in Sabadell, won the 1969/70 championship and signed some brilliant numbers that made him worthy of it: scored 53 goals and conceded just 22 in the 30 games played. In addition, the Red & White players José Eulogio Gárate and Luis Aragonés, both with 16 goals, shared the top scorer trophy with Amancio Amaro.

Ten days later, on 29 April, our team received the trophy at during a friendly match against AC Milan, which ended with a 1-0 result in favour of our team thanks to a goal by Luis Aragonés. With LaLiga 1969/70 began one of the most successful decades in our history in which we won two more league titles (1972/73 and 1976/77), two Copa del Generalísimo (1972 and 1976) and the Intercontinental Cup in 1975.
