Route de Lorient Stadium (30,000 spectators) will host the latest game in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday at 19:00. Rennes and Atletico Madrid will meet for first time in this continental competition and will be looking to maintain their perfect records in European competition.
The French have not lost at home in their continental games since October 4, 2007 and have won their last five European games conceding a single goal. Meanwhile, Atletico has won both their away trips in the Europa League this season scoring six goals in the process without conceding.
Frédéric Antonetti’s men (Saint - Etienne, Nice, Bastia and Gamba Osaka) are required to win after losing to Udinese in the opening group game, despite controlling most of the game and going ahead on the scoreboard, they let the three points slip and will have to gamble for any chance for qualification. The red and whites are less urgent. Their 2-0 win at the Calderon against Celtic in the group opener puts them in a strong position.
However, Rennes have started well in France to date with everything pointing to this being a difficult game for Atletico. Fifth in Ligue 1 and just two points behind leaders Paris St - Germaine de Javier Pastore, the Britons arrive in European competition looking to repeat the result of their only previous clash against a Spanish team. In the 2005/2006 season, they prevailed 3-1 and drew 0-0 against Osasuna of Javier Aguirre.
Atletico will be looking to maintain the good results achieved recently in the neighboring country. In the last 10 games against French teams the rojiblancos have won five, drawn four and only lost once against Lens in 2000. The last time the club visited the French territory it ended goalless draw against Olympique Marseille, who won 2-1 on the banks of the Manzanares.
Rennes will have to reorganise their defense after the losses of two of their men in the back, Mangani and John Boye, who suffered a torn left hamstring last weekend will remain sidelined for the next six weeks. The Atletico defense must be careful with Victor Hugo Montano, the Colombian striker has seven goals in League and UEFA Europa League this season.
For the second match in the group stage of UEFA Europa League, Atletico have called upon 20 players. With Joel, Koke, Antonio Lopez and Silvio missing out.
Atletico return to the Europa League looking to forget the defeat of Barcelona. To do this, Gregorio Manzano will have all his offensive potential fighting it out to make the difference. If the League Atletico have not yet scored away from home, but in their European matches they have scored an average of three goals per game away from home.
