Victoria in the new San Mames was achieve and a place in the semifinal sealed. Atletico Madrid is the first team to win in the new stadium of Athletic Bilbao. Raul Garcia and Diego Costa were the goalscorers as they take a step closer to the semi- final Copa del Rey.

The second leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey had all the necessary ingredients to make it a great match. With Atletico coming in to the game in front, Athletic launched a relentless attack from the moment the game began. But Iago Herrerín saved his side after just 2 minutes after Diego Costa attacked the Basque goal.

Atletico Madrid were strong in defense as in recent games, seeing away danger and looking to counterattack and take advantage of set pieces. But if there was a victim in last Sunday's game at Vallecas with Óliver’s injury, today it was Filipe Luis who could only play 14 minutes. Simeone had to make the first change of the game in defense, but Insua came on and looked at home.

Before this change, Courtois began his repertoire of stops. In the 7th minute he saved a header from Ander Herrera. Later, it was Aduriz who tested the Belgian with a header that he beat out. Then after 32 minutes the Atletico keeper saved a shot from Muniain. The offensive of the Basques was increased with a low shot from Mikel Rico who missed the bottom right corner of the Madrid goal.

The second clear opportunity for Simeone’s side came from a set play after 37 minutes. Koke took the corner with Raul Garcia heading towards the goal. He was reporting fIt was a warning from Garcias of what was to come.

In the final stretch of the first half, the Bilbao goal came. Aduriz hooked in a tremendous cross by Balenziaga to level the tie on the 42th minute. Immediately afterwards, Courtois again establish himself as the hero of our own with a double save from Iraola first and then Aduriz.

The second half was another story. Diego Pablo Simeone ordered all-out attack to find the goal that sealed the passage to the semifinals and the first warning was triggered by Diego Costa who stuck to the bottom corner a final hot from Adrian saved by Iago Herrerín. A minute later, the Basque stopped a header from Diego Costa . It was the prelude to the equalizer.

54 minutes, Raúl García tried again to beat Iago, after a clearance on the left side of the Atletico attack, Insua crossed to Raúl García who turned the ball home. A goal worth its weight in gold because it forced the Basques to need two goals to get through.

Simeone's team stepped it up again. The home side tried but came up against a tough defense and a spectacular goalkeeper in Courtois, who pulled of top saves from Ander Herrera, one in 61st and one in the 70th minute.

The best was yet to come after a pass from Koke set Diego Costa free and the Spanish-Brazilian went racing towards goal in a 1 on 1. As he closed down on the keeper, he cooley rounded him and fired Atletico in to the semifinals. Real Madrid are next at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg next week.
