Tiago: “The squad is confident and we have to keep playing well”
“We have to lend continuity to the team for it to grow”
Tiago Mendes was the Atlético de Madrid player who attended to the media on Thursday. The Portuguese central midfielder analyzed the situation of the team and explained how is recovery from a cervical sprain is going. “I’m still not well, but we’ll see how I’m doing tomorrow. Right now I think it will be very difficult to get back for this weekend, but back problems can go away in a day, so we’ll have to wait and see,” he pointed out.
Tiago appeared very satisfied with the way the team’s been playing in recent weeks and assured that “the squad is very good right now, with lots of confidence. If I don’t play, someone else will and will play at a very good level. It feels like if we had ten more games left instead of four we’d surely make it to Champions, but we’ve made mistakes and are paying for it. We’re going to try to finish La Liga well in these four remaining fixtures.”
Additionally, the Portuguese player explained to all his point of view as to why the squad had a hard time finding consistency. “We have a tough time with that, as we did last season as well. This year we had a long stretch in which we were lacking confidence and things weren’t going our way. That depends a lot on the players. Now we’re all doing well, getting the best out of each one of us and that really helps the team. There have been moments during this season in which we haven’t played our best and the team has ended up paying for it,” he asserted.
Tiago assured that the key to achieving consistency lies in “lending continuity to the players who are here so that we can grow. You have to make a strong team once and for all and be aware of its value and give it the confidence to play at a consistent standard all year.”
To finish, the player on loan at Atlético de Madrid commented on his personal situation and his intentions for the future. “I’m on loan until the end of the year and I don’t know anything else. I feel like an Atlético player, as if I had a contract, and I’m battling to make sure the team finished as high up as possible. Now the only thing is for Atlético to want me and for Juventus to let me leave; we all have to agree, but that doesn’t matter much right now. We have two weeks of work left and then we’ll resolve everything,” he finalized.
