Our first-ever LaLiga start scoring first in each of the opening twelve matches
It is also the eleventh time we have scored in all of the first twelve league games; the last time dating back 43 years.
Twelve league matchdays played since the start of the season, twelve consecutive matches finding the net... and twelve matches in a row opening the scoring. Another unprecedented milestone in Atlético’s history, achieved in Saturday’s victory over Levante.
Although this is the eleventh time we have started a league campaign scoring in each of the first twelve matches, never before had we managed to score the opening goal in all of them, as we have this season. The twelve opening goals have come from Julián Álvarez (3), Sørloth, Giuliano (2), Barrios, Gallagher, Le Normand and Almada, as well as own goals from Starfelt and De la Fuente. Indeed, the team’s scoring ability has been widely shared so far this season, with Griezmann, Nico González and Álex Baena also getting on the scoresheet in other moments of the campaign.
Together, they have helped match a record last achieved in the 1982/83 season, when Atleti were managed by Luis Aragonés. It’s a feat more reminiscent of classic football than today’s game, as shown by the four decades that have passed since. Previously, the team had done so in the 1980/81, 1978/79, 1957/58, 1955/56, 1951/52, 1948/49, 1947/48 and 1940/41 seasons, as well as in 1933/34 in the Second Division. However, only in 1980/81 and 1933/34 did this record come with a higher number of wins (8) compared to the current seven.
The challenge now is to extend this run as far as possible. The streak ended on Matchday 13 in both 1982/83 and 1980/81; on Matchday 14 in 1957/58; on Matchday 15 in 1955/56 and 1933/34; on Matchday 16 in 1948/49; on Matchday 18 in 1978/79; and on Matchday 20 in 1947/48. However, special mention must go to the records set in 1951/52 and 1940/41.
In 1951/52, our team scored in 29 of the 30 league matches, missing the target only on the penultimate matchday. Meanwhile, in 1940/41, Atleti found the net in all 22 games of that season — a campaign that ended with the club’s second-ever league title.
