‘Looking to the sky: the creation of the Sky Ribbon at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano’
Welcome Night saw the debut of the 404 metre wide, 5 metre tall, 360° screen built into the inner ring of the stadium’s roof. Today, we’re showing you how this complex project came to fruition.
From project planning to inauguration, the Club has always wanted the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to be the home of all Atléticos. It’s a stadium that elevates the experience of attending a football match by combining passion for the Rojiblancos with the latest technology. Throughout all these seasons, our supporters and visitors from around the world have witnessed it, but we wanted to do more. Today, we can say we have achieved just that, thanks to the Sky Ribbon, the crowning jewel that cements our home ground as one of the most innovative and spectacular spaces to host any major event.
Designing, planning, building and activating this LED screen, which measures over 2,000m2, was a mammoth task for both the Club and our partners, who embarked on this journey with us late in 2023. On Welcome Night on 21 August of this year, the project was unveiled. Almost two years of hard work have now been condensed into a 15-minute Atleti Studios documentary.
With this audiovisual piece, we wanted to pay homage to all of the people who made this “perfect screen for the Riyadh Air Metropolitano” possible, as highlighted by René Abril, our director of Technology and Digital Development. It’s an astounding piece of technology indeed, which even managed to surprise our players, such as Griezmann and Oblak, who discussed their feelings on the video. It also astonished our supporters, rival clubs, event promoters, and bodies such as UEFA, who awarded the Riyadh Air Metropolitano with the hosting rights for the 2027 Champions League final.
The Sky Ribbon makes all Atléticos proud. We hope that you enjoy this documentary as much as we enjoy the challenge of taking the fan experience at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to the next level.
