Kun Agüero shines against Deportivo and leads Atlético to victory (2-0)

The ‘rojiblancos’ jump back up into European spots

Atlético de Madrid earned three very important points against Deportivo de la Coruña at their home stadium. Two goals from Kun Agüero, who was the central figure of the match, allowed the ‘rojiblancos’ to return to European spots and keep Deportivo winless at the Calderón in the past eleven years.

Atlético de Madrid faced off against Deportivo, coached by Lotina, and the ‘rojiblancos’ went into the match with a dire need to win. Three crucial points were at stake that the home side needed so as not to fall off the pace with those at the top of the table. Things didn’t start off so well for the ‘rojiblancos’, as Diego Forlán missed a penalty kick in the third minute, after Estrada Fernández called Aranzubia for tripping up Kun Agüero.

The Uruguayan’s bad luck was fixed by his teammate up front. Sergio Kun Agüero brought electricity to the Calderón. The Argentine received a pass down the right wing, dribbled into the area, cut back past two defenders and slipped his shot past Aranzubia to the near post. It was an amazing goal from Kun that made sure Atlético didn’t sink, and caused the whole team to react.

With a deficit on the scoreboard, Deportivo found themselves forced to push forward. Lotina’s men left plenty of open spaces in defence and both Kun and Forlán had chances to play between the lines. The visitors didn’t want to make things too easy for the ‘colchoneros’, but the fact is that Atlético created clear danger each time they approached the opposing area. Filipe Luis was having a special match, as he was facing his former team, but that didn’t diminish his drive to attack and show his most offensive side.

Lotina protested from the sideline and tried to get his team to use its common sense. Deportivo was very disorganized and it was costing them the match in the opening minutes of the match. Atlético de Madrid was aware of the importance of the clash, and therefore appeared serious and well-placed on the pitch under the orders of Fran Escribá (Head Assistant) from the sideline. It should be recalled that Quique Sánchez Flores was sitting out the second game of his two-match suspension against Deportivo.

Forlán almost increased the lead on a free kick in minute 27. The Uruguayan unleashed a wicked right-footed shot that Aranzubia was able to get his fingertips on. The ball hit off the inside of the post and miraculously trickled across the goal-line without going in. The stands at the Calderón shouted one name in unison: Kun Agüero. The Atlético striker again took out his weapons and rendered the Deportivo defenders helpless. The attack started with Raúl García, the Atleti ‘10’ took in the pass, dribbled into the area, faked a shot and then beat the Depor goalkeeper. Quique’s squad was having a great evening. A much superior Atlético side went into the dressing room at halftime as Deportivo was trying, but was unable to do anything in the first half.

In the second half, Lotina’s men came out fresher. The Deportivo manager decided to sacrifice a defender and throw his side forward in attack, but Atlético continued to be well-positioned on the field. In minute 58 Raúl García tried his luck from outside the area, but the shot was a bit forced and the ball was off-target. The pace of the match decreased with respect to the first half.

Quique’s squad looked very comfortable on the pitch. They searched for the opposing goal and found it; the Reyes-Kun connection was once again vital in leading to Atlético de Madrid’s scoring chances. Deportivo didn’t create even a single chance in the first 25 minutes of the second half. The clearest went to Lassad, but the response came from Reyes on a diagonal shot that brushed past the Deportivo netminder’s goal. The winger from Seville was very active all game long.

Fran Mérida took the pitch stuck in. He could have increased the lead for Atlético in the 40th minute, but he was just unable to get through the spider web strung together by the Coruña defenders. Kun was then inches from tallying a third. The Argentine was unable to get ihis hat trick, but earned all the glory of the night.
