Gabi surpasses the number of seasons as captain by Miguel Ángel Ruiz
The midfielder trained in the Academy of Atlético de Madrid, continues making history in our club.
The match against Girona FC was undoubtedly a very special fixture for our captain Gabriel Fernandez Arenas 'Gabi', who in Montilivi, continued increasing his legend as Atlético’s football player.
Just like he has been doing in every match he has played from the beginning of the 2012-2013 season, the midfielder from Madrid wore again the captain's armband of Atlético de Madrid this Saturday and reaches his sixth season fulfilling this vital role both on and off the pitch.
Thus, Gabi - who inherited the armband from Antonio López - surpasses the five seasons Miguel Ángel Ruiz was captain of the team in the 1980’s.
But this is not the only record our midfielder from Madrid will be remembered by at Montilivi, because against Girona, he has equalled the number of times that another Atlético myth, Luis Aragonés, wore our colours: 368.
Trained in the Academy of Atlético de Madrid, Gabi, who is 34 years old, made his debut with the first team on the 7th of February of 2004, and since then, he has won a UEFA Europa League (2012), a UEFA Super Cup (2012), a King’s Cup (2013), a League (2014) and a Spanish Super Cup (2014); all of the trophies - except the first one – also raised as Atlético’s captain.
