Embracing history while looking to the future

As of today, 1 July 2024, the 1947 shield will once again be the official image of our club following the overwhelming and decisive choice of the Rojiblancos during the binding vote held by the club on 30 June 2023, approved by the Board of Directors a few days earlier.

After the end of the season at the Cívitas Metropolitano, the club decided to honour the faithful who wanted to see the return of the old shield, a ceremony that took place on 27 May. It had a two-fold effect thanks to the great artwork signed by Sra. Rushmore, as well as the hoisting of the huge flag in the stadium with the shield that today officially represents the club's crest. This joint event was the kickoff for this progressive process which began to integrate the shield in iconic places such as our spectacular home dressing room at the Cívitas Metropolitano, the Atlético's Customer Service Office or the club's offices entrance. However, due to the complexity of the project, it will be completed in the next few months.

Atlético de Madrid's philosophy is to embrace and celebrate its history, while always looking to the future. In doing so, the 2017 shield joins the long list of shields and crests that have depicted us in the course of our history. A history that began in 1903 with the original shield –borrowed from Athletic Club de Bilbao– and to which homage was paid for our 120th anniversary with the second blue-and-white kit worn last season.

In the history of our shields, it is worth highlighting the outstanding spot held by the shield with the wings of Atlético Aviación, with which we won the first two leagues (1939-40 and 1940-41); and also the current shield, with which we have won the last three titles (the Europa League against Olympique Marseille in Lyon, the European Super Cup in Tallinn against Real Madrid and the mythical League 2020-21, won on that unforgettable afternoon in Valladolid); and the current shield, with which the women's team won two Leagues (2017-18 and 2018-19), the Spanish Super Cup in 2021 and the Copa de la Reina in the 2022-23 season.
