Diego Godín: “The biggest honour is for you to be proud of my dedication”
Our captain played the full game against Sevilla at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Diego Godín played his last home game for Atleti on Sunday. Our captain said goodbye to the Red & White family after 388 matches at our club, having arrived in summer 2010. The Uruguayan has scored 27 goals at our club and has become the non-Spanish player with the most games for Atleti.
It was a very emotional day for Godín, and he was presented with a captain’s armband by Koke, Griezmann and Juanfran, as well as a shirt signed by his teammates and a plaque by Atlético de Madrid legend Luiz Pereira.
The Uruguayan spoke to the crowd after the match.
“I hope I've made you proud with what I've done, on and off the pitch, with the values of this team and this club. Respecting my teammates, respecting you. The biggest honour is for you to be proud of my dedication,” our captain said.
Godin claimed that he would forever remain an Atlético de Madrid fan.
“This tribute is for everyone. I came from very far away and the fans have made me feel at home since the first day. They’ve made me love this badge and this shirt. Today, Godín the footballer says goodbye, but I will always be a fan,” the Uruguayan said.
The defender will always be remembered for his commitment and for his important goals, such as his header at the Camp Nou which gave us the 2013-14 LaLiga title. Godín leaves our club after winning one league, two Europa Leagues, three UEFA Super Cup, one Copa del Rey and one Spanish Super Cup.
Thank you, Godín.
