Defeat against Villarreal
The Red & White side were denied victory against Villarreal by Gerard Moreno's two goals.
The first 45 minutes had a bit of everything. Both teams began by testing their opponents. Villarreal, led by Lo Celso, began to threaten Oblak's area, with a goal disallowed in the 34th minute against Gerard Moreno for handball after a header hit the crossbar and then the player's arm. This is when Atlético de Madrid reacted, especially through Álvaro Morata, who had numerous shots from side crosses, but to no avail. João Félix and Marcos Llorente joined the red and white offensive, teaming up and creating danger but without luck to beat Rulli's goal.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, with both teams making contact, and the red and white team began to look towards the rival area. The changes accelerated the pace of the game and a gallop by Antoine Griezmann, who came on for Lemar, ended up slightly wide of the visitors' goal. In the 67th minute, Correa and Cunha came on for João Félix and Morata, respectively, and their first move came very close to scoring the first goal of the game. The Argentinian's cross was met by the striker in front of goal and saved by Rulli, who would later become the protagonist of the match.
Before that, a poor clearance by Nahuel Molina was met by Yeremy to beat Oblak's goal and make it 0-1. If Rulli became the star of the match, it was for his low save from a Carrasco shot after the ball came to him after another close-range shot from Cunha had been tipped over the crossbar. With the team searching for an equaliser in the closing minutes, Gerard Moreno took advantage to make it 0-2 in the final minute to end the game.
