Courtois: "To compete you have to work hard now"
The Belgian appeared at the first press conference of the preseason after training in Majadahonda Sports City and expressed his views on the future of Atletico this season, the signings, their performance and his renewal at the club.
After the morning practice, Thibaut Courtois opened the first press conference of the preseason 2013-14. The Belgian was asked about continuity at Atletico after the agreement between Atletico and his parent club Chelsea. "I am very happy to continue another year here. Chelsea and Atletico came to an agreement and I am very happy to be here and play Champions League and the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona, which is another very important title".
The keeper stated that the club should aspire to the same as last year, which is somewhat difficult but not impossible. "The aim of the club is to win titles, we have in August one that we can win, obviously we will also fight for the top positions in the league. Stay as long as possible between Barcelona and Madrid to fight for first place. It's hard but I think we can."
The Champions League is the most important title at club level in Europe. Courtois appeals to follow the example of a team that conducted a magnificent season on the continent, Malaga: "In Champions League we have to go as far as possible, we are capable of it. We have seen Malaga almost reach the semi-finals and we have in the squad to do it."
"I will try to play like last year and even improve more because I'm young and I can do better, go to the next level," he said.
The keeper particularly stressed the importance of the preseason preparation, noting that if things are done right now, the physical edge will prevail. "If you want to compete you have to work very hard now to be in good shape in June. Then there's the World Cup and for that we have to play very well all year."
When asked about the departure of Radamel Falcao, Thibaut Courtois expressed confidence in the current squad, which has the same base as last year. "The team is full, just missing Radamel. The club is looking for reinforcements for the attack but we signed Baptistão who is a good player. Anyway, we are very good team this season," he concluded.
