Borja: “Getting injured on the day of my debut at the Vicente Calderón was a blow”
“The injury has taught me that football isn’t just a rosy path”
Borja González has overcome the injury that kept him of the pitch for six months. The torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee is in the past and now he’s only thinking about improving his fitness. “I’d like to thank Doctor Villalón, Óscar Pitillas, the Club physiotherapists, and Doctor Guillén for all of the work they’ve done with me,” stated the player.
The ‘rojiblanco’ striker spoke about his short-term plans and said that “I want to get better, as in spite of receiving medical clearance I’m not at 100%. A muscle tear had me out for two weeks, but now I’m getting better. I’m going to play with the reserve squad and I’ll try to help them out, as they’re not going through a good moment. Besides, I need to get into the necessary rhythm. If the first squad needs me and I can help them, I’ll be there.”
Borja preferred to stick with the positive part of his injury, stating that “it’s better that this happened to me when I was 18 years-old. It would have been worse had I been older. I have a long time ahead of me, I’m young, and I want to keep making progress in football. I have to go step-by-step.
“During this time out I’ve had time to reflect and see what’s really important. The support from my parents and my friends has been very important during my recovery. Getting injured on the day I’d always dreamed about was a blow. Now I’m aware that I have Agüero, Forlán and Diego Costa ahead of me. My team is the reserves, but when Quique Sánchez Flores needs me, I’ll be there. I’ll try to give 100% when he needs me.”
During these six months, he’s had teammate Sergio Asenjo, who also had the same knee injury, by his side. Borja explained that “I was lucky to have him by my side. Getting injured is really tough, and even more so for such a long period, but fortunately we were together the past six months. Asenjo is a friend. He’s always encouraged me and we’ve spent many hours together. He gave me advine and behaved very well towards me.”
Borja saw his dream of playing with the first squad come true last 15 May. Now he’s focused on a new dream, highlighting that “it’s to be at 100% and getting back to playing with the first team. I know that Agüero, Forlán nad Diego Costa are ahead of me, but I want to play with the first squad again. The reserves aren’t doing so well and I want to help them. The hardest thing was everything. The injury has taught me that football isn’t just a rosy path. You have to fight hard along the path to be at the top.”
