Atlético and Málaga reach a deal, in principle, for Camacho and Asenjo

Both players attend the training to say goodbye to their teammates

Club Atlético de Madrid and Málaga C.F. have reached a deal, in principle, for the transfer of Ignacio Camacho and the loan until the end of the season of Sergio Asenjo. With a few minor details still to be wrapped up, the central midfielder and goalkeeper will head to the Andalusia city to pass the pertaining medical examination, which must be done to finalize the operation.

For this reason, and taking advantage of the team returning to work on Tuesday 28 December, Camacho and Asenjo wanted to attend the Majadahonda Sports Complex to say farewell to those who have been their teammates and coaches.

Camacho is a player raised in the ‘rojiblanco’ academy. He arrived at the first squad during the 2007/2008 season under Javier Aguirre. The Mexican manager had followed his path through the junior system and that season gave him his debut in a Copa del Rey match against Granada 74. Months later he made his league debut on 1 March 2008 against Barcelona. At just 18 years of age he settled into the midfield and contributed to the ‘rojiblanco’ team qualifying for Champions League that season.

He was an international in the junior categories of the Spanish National Team, and Camacho was a captain of all of the national teams in which he’s played. He was a European champion with the Under-17s and Runner-Up at the Under-17 World Cup, where he teamed up with David De Gea. He was proclaimed champion of Europa League last May and months later champion of the European Super Cup with Atlético de Madrid. Now the central midfielder will begin a new stage at Málaga.

For his part, Sergio Asenjo is also heading to the side from Andalusia, although in his case he will go on loan until the end of the season. The goalkeeper arrived at the ‘rojiblanco’ organization at the start of the 2009-2010 season after his great performances at Real Valladolid. Weeks before the league championship came to a close, he was injured on a chance play on 8 May. It was an unfortunate injury, as he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which kept him off the pitch for six months. He returned to a matchday roster on 15 December against Bayer Leverkusen and will now leave on loan for the next six months at the Malaga side.

Asenjo has been an international with the Under-17 Spanish national team, with which he earned a bronze medal at the Under-17 European Cup in 2006, with the Under-19 Spanish national team, with which he won the Under-19 European Cup, and with the Under-21 Spanish national team.

Club Atlético de Madrid, on behalf of its President, Mr. Enrique Cerezo, of its Managing Director, Mr. Miguel Ángel Gil, and all of those who form part of the organization, expresses its most sincere appreciation to Ignacio Camacho and Sergio Asenjo for their dedication and professionalism shown while they wore the red-and-white jersey of Atlético and wishes them luck on the new personal and professional adventure on which they are going to embark on the Costa del Sol.
