Álex Baena, Llorente, Pubill and Grimaldo become 2026 World Cup champions!
For the third time in the club’s history and in three consecutive tournaments, several Atlético de Madrid players have lifted the FIFA World Cup while representing the club, in a final featuring ten Rojiblanco players.
Following Spain’s victory over Argentina at MetLife Stadium on Sunday (1-0), Álex Baena, Alejandro Grimaldo, Marcos Llorente and Marc Pubill were crowned FIFA World Cup champions, adding their names to the exclusive list of Atlético de Madrid players who have achieved this feat while representing our club. The first names were added to the list at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with Antoine Griezmann, Thomas Lemar and Lucas Hernández leading the way. The list was then expanded at Qatar 2022 by Ángel Correa, Rodrigo De Paul, and Nahuel Molina.
La Roja were crowned champions in a final that featured ten Atlético players, making the club the team with the most representatives in a World Cup final since Italy 1934. With Thiago Almada, Julián Alvarez, Nico Gonzalez, Juan Musso, Giuliano Simeone and Molina all featuring in the Argentina squad, Atlético had more players involved than any other club in the decisive match for the third consecutive World Cup final. Sime Vrsaljko and Griezmann were previously runners-up in 2018 and 2022, respectively.
We are incredibly proud of our ten finalists, as well as our three other Rojiblanco players at the tournament that just came to an end in North America: Alexander Sørloth (Norway), José María Giménez (Uruguay) and Obed Vargas (Mexico).
