Welcome, Obed Vargas!

Our club and Seattle Sounders have reached an agreement for the transfer of the Mexican footballer, who will wear the red and white for the remainder of this season and a further four campaigns.

Atlético de Madrid and Seattle Sounders have reached an agreement for the transfer of Obed Vargas, who has signed for our club until 30 June 2030.

Born on 5 August 2005 in Anchorage (Alaska, United States) and naturalised Mexican, he came through the youth ranks of Seattle Sounders and Tacoma Defiance. He made his Major League Soccer debut on 23 July 2021, becoming the third-youngest player ever to feature in the competition.

Obed established himself as one of the standout prospects in the MLS thanks to his performances in Seattle. Since his debut, he has made a total of 158 competitive appearances, scoring eight goals and providing eleven assists.

To date, the Mexican international has two major career honours. In the 2021/22 season, he was crowned CONCACAF Champions League winner, before lifitng the Leagues Cup in 2025.

He made his international debut for Mexico on 15 October 2024 in a friendly against the United States played at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.

His move to Atlético de Madrid marks his first professional experience in Europe. He previously faced our team in the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup held in the United States.

Our new player successfully completed the required medical examination at the Vithas–Invictum High Performance Sports Medicine Centre at the Hospital Universitario Madrid Arturo Soria, before heading to the club offices at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. There, he was welcomed by our chief executive officer, Miguel Ángel Gil, alongside whom he signed his contract with the club.
