Welcome, Matt Doherty!
Solid right-back, credits extensive experience in football in the United Kingdom.
Matthew James Doherty (January 16, 1992, Dublin) is a new Atlético de Madrid player. The Irish right-back arrives free after terminating his contract with Tottenham Hotspur and signs until the end of the season. The footballer will be presented this Wednesday, February 1, at the Cívitas Metropolitano auditorium starting at 1:30 p.m. CET, in an act that can be followed live on our social media channels and website.
A solid 31-year-old right-footed winger -with the capacity to also occupy the interior demarcation-, he holds the position well in defense and once he regains possession of the ball, his good long passes facilitates the creation of attack plays.
Irish international for 29 times to date, he made his professional debut wearing the Wolverhampton Wanderers shirt, whom he signed for in the summer of 2010 from the Bohemians youth academy, the last club in his country where he completed his training. After being loaned to Hibernian in the winter transfer window of 2011/12 and to Bury of the League One between October 2012 and January 2013, Matt Doherty finally settled in 'Wolves', whose jersey he defended until the 2019/20.
With Wolverhampton he ended up playing a total of 302 official matches, being a fundamental piece in his club's double promotion from League One to the Championship and from there to the Premier League.
In the 2020/21, he joined Tottenham Hotspur, with whom he has played 71 games, and from there he came to reinforce our team, with whom he signed his contract after having successfully passed the relevant medical examination at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra.
Welcome, Matt Doherty!
