The 27-year-old Danish defensive midfielder joins our club from Sporting CP.
Atlético de Madrid and Sporting CP have reached an agreement over the transfer of Morten Hjulmand, who has signed for our club until 30 June 2031.
The 27-year-old right-footed defensive midfielder stands out for his physical strength, his ability to win the ball back and his reading of the game, which enhances his anticipation and ball distribution.
Born on June 25, 1999 in Kastrup (Denmark), Hjulmand came through the youth ranks at FC Copenhagen, from where he made the leap to professional football in the summer of 2018 to join Admira Wacker in the Austrian Bundesliga. There, he played 74 matches over two and a half seasons before being transferred to Lecce in January 2021. He continued to develop in Italy and was a key figure in his team’s promotion to Serie A during the 2021/22 season, remaining with the ‘giallorossi’ until the end of the 2022/23 season and making a total of 95 appearances. In the summer of 2023, he signed for Sporting CP in Lisbon, for whom he made 141 appearances, helping the club win two Portuguese league titles (2023/24 and 2024/25) and one Taça de Portugal (2024/25).
His leadership qualities on and off the pitch led him to wear the captain’s armband at Lecce and Sporting CP. At the Italian club, he also became the youngest captain in the team’s history – aged 23 – and the second-youngest ever in Serie A after Francesco Totti.
An international at youth level for the Denmark national team, he made his senior debut on Sep. 7, 2023 in a 4–0 victory for the Danish side against San Marino – the first of a total of 27 appearances to date.
Our new signing passed his medical at the Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre at Arturo Soria University Hospital in Madrid, before heading to the club offices at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, where he signed his contract with our club.
