Welcome, Grimaldo!
The left-back, who is currently competing with Spain in the 2026 World Cup, joins our club from Bayer Leverkusen.
Atlético de Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement for the transfer of Alejandro Grimaldo, who has signed for our club until June 30, 2030.
The Spaniard is versatile left-back who can also play as a wing-back, central midfielder and even an attacking midfielder. He stands out for his technical ability and vision, which allow him to contribute in attack by scoring goals and providing assists.
Born on Sep. 20, 1995 in Valencia, Grimaldo came through the youth ranks at Atlético Vallbonense, Valencia CF and FC Barcelona, from whose reserve team he was signed by Benfica in December 2015. Wearing the Lisbon club’s shirt, he made 303 appearances, scoring 27 goals and providing 66 assists over seven and a half seasons, during which time he won four league titles, three Super Cups, one Cup and one League Cup.
In the summer of 2023 he joined Bayer Leverkusen, for whom he made 145 appearances – netting 30 goals and providing 45 assists. Grimaldo was a key figure in the club’s historic Bundesliga and German Cup double in the 2023/24 season – in which they also finished as runners-up in the UEFA Europa League – as well as in their victory in the German Super Cup at the start of the following campaign.
A Spain international since youth level, he won the UEFA Euro Under-19 in 2012. Grimaldo made his senior debut on Nov. 16, 2023 in Spain’s 3-1 win over Cyprus in a qualifying match for UEFA Euro 2024, a tournament he would go on to win. The left-back will try to repeat the success at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Welcome to Atleti, Grimaldo!
