Welcome, ‘Cuti’ Romero!
The Argentina international, who recently played in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, has joined our club from Tottenham Hotspur.
Atlético de Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement over the transfer of Cristian Gabriel ‘Cuti’ Romero, who has signed for our club until June 30, 2031.
The 28-year-old right-footed center-back is an experienced defender who is highly physical, quick to anticipate danger and decisive in the tackle, with considerable authority and leadership on the pitch.
Born April 27, 1998 in Córdoba, Argentina, Cristian Romero began his professional career at Club Atlético Belgrano, making his first team debut in August 2016. He spent two seasons there before moving to Europe to join Italian side Genoa. Following an impressive debut in Serie A, he signed for Juventus in the summer of 2019. While under contract with the Bianconeri, he spent successive loan spells first at Genoa (2019-20), then at Atalanta (2020-21) – where he was named Serie A’s best defender – and finally at Tottenham Hotspur (2021-22).
The English club made his move permanent at the conclusion of his loan spell, leading him to wear the Spurs shirt for another four years. In total, he spent five seasons in London, making 156 appearances, scoring 13 goals, providing seven assists and winning the 2024-25 UEFA Europa League. In that competition, Cristian Romero was named both the tournament’s best player and the standout performer in the final, which marked Tottenham’s first European title in 31 years.
A 58-time Argentina senior international, he made his debut for the national team in June 2021 and has never finished below second place in any competition he has played with La Albiceleste to date. He was a key figure in Argentina’s Finalissima and 2022 World Cup triumphs, as well as its 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles and its recent runner-up finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Our new signing passed his medical at the Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre at Arturo Soria University Hospital in Madrid, before heading to the club offices at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, WHERE he signed his contract with our club.
