The Wanda Metropolitano paid tribute to Diego Forlán ahead of Saturday’s Madrid Derby. The Uruguay striker was presented with a commemorative plaque by Manolo Sánchez Delgado as a tribute to the 198 official games he played for our club across five seasons.

Forlán was a versatile and hard-working striker with a knack for goal, thanks to which he netted 96 times in his 198 games for Atleti. In fact, he won the Golden Boot in the 2008/09 season, during which he scored 32 goals. The brace he netted in the 2010 Europa League final – the first time our club won the competition – will go down in history.

The striker arrived at our club in the 2007/08 season and spent five years in Madrid, during which he won the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2010.

Diego Forlán was our club’s ambassador during this year’s Atleti Summer Tour, which took place in the US and Mexico. It’s a great honour to be able to pay tribute to such a magnificent player that will always be remembered by the Atleti Family.
