UEFA issued a statement on the situation in case of Sion

The case is pending resolution of the TAS

The European Union of Football Associations (UEFA) has issued on Monday 17 October a statement on its website about the status of the case of Sion, the Swiss team eliminated from the Europa League for a claim of his rival, Celtic FC, for improper alignment of several players and following a decision of the Control and Disciplinary Body of UEFA and subsequently ratified by the Appeals Committee of UEFA.   Sion went to the regular courts, which ruled in favor of the Swiss club, and the case is currently pending final resolution of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).   UEFA has called on Friday October 21 the four teams in Group I, Udinese Calcio, Club Atlético de Madrid, Celtic FC and Stade Rennais, at a meeting in Geneva to explain the situation of the case.   UEFA full statement on the situation in the case of Sion:   'Today, Monday October 17 at 12:00, as requested by the Vaud Cantonal Court, UEFA has presented a series of documents that explain the various possible actions related to the reintegration of FC Sion in the UEFA Europa League. After a detailed analysis of the rules of the competition, the division of UEFA competitions has provided several scenarios for the reintegration of the club in the tournament, without having to replace the Celtic FC, properly classified after the Committee confirmed the decision Control and Disciplinary Body of UEFA and the Appeals Committee of UEFA. The first involves the cancellation of all previous matches in Group I of the UEFA Europa League, establishing a series of new games in a group of five, following the rules of the former group stage of UEFA Cup, with the teams playing against each other, either at home or at home. These games could be played between November 24 and December 22. The second option allows the integration of Sion in Group I as a fifth additional team, so that the results and the points of the games and played in the group would remain valid. It would have to play eight additional games, from late November and end in February 2012. The other options, mostly valid in the case of a late reinstatement of FC Sion in the tournament, they assume that the Swiss team could enter directly into the knockout phase, after playing a qualifying play-off to be decided. The options provided also analyze all the consequences from an organizational perspective, the impact on the ranking of clubs, the points awarded and the distribution of benefits. According to the timetable, all possibilities are feasible, and that professional football is played usually in winter, and many leagues, such as the English, Scottish or Dutch name a few, play games in December and / or January without any problems. Other measures, such as indicating the results that have occurred so far in the group as provisional pending before the courts, have also been carried out and communicated to the Vaud Cantonal Court. Of course all these options have one thing in common, and posed a great impact for the other clubs participating in the competition. UEFA, therefore, wishes to underline the fact that other clubs might accept these possibilities only after a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), as the TAS is the only authority we have all accepted as competent sports to decide matters in the UEFA Europa League. All possible scenarios studied by the UEFA offer the best possibility of reinstating the FC Sion, while preserving the interests of other clubs, limiting damages to the competition and provide sufficient time to ensure good matches organization additional. In none of the suggested scenarios proposed a first time before 24 November. There is a high probability of obtaining a decision on the merits of the case in the CAS, provided that the FC Sion accept the accelerated procedure of TAS. Therefore, it is clear that if the CAS rules in favor of FC Sion, based solely on the merits, UEFA and have done your homework by examining all possible options for the full reintegration of the club in the UEFA Europa League, while respecting fully the rules of the competition.
