The ‘rojiblanco’ players, radiant about the win over Universidad
Fran Mérida: “I’m happy because we played a good match”
The ‘rojiblanco’ players were happy about the victory over Universidad and about practically sentencing the qualifying round in the first leg. The return leg at the Vicente Calderón is now nothing more than a mere formality. On this occasion, two very excited players, Fran Mérida, who scored his first official goal with Atlético, and Alberto Perea, who debuted with the first squad in an official competition, attended to the media after the game.
Fran Mérida stated that “I’m happy because I think we played a good match and we pretty much put the tie away. It would be very strange to lose it now, although we have to come out with the same intensity at the Calderón and try to win that contest. I’m pleased because I played. I could care less about in what position. I’m an attacking central midfielder and the manager knows that, but the important thing is to play.”
For his part, Alberto Perea was like a child with brand new shoes. The only thing missing was a goal because he left sparkles of his skill during the time that he was on the pitch. “Debuting with the first team is as big as it gets, but I’m aware that I’m an Atlético B player. I just took advantage of the chance given to me by the coach and I tried to play as well as possible. I know that my place is in the reserve squad. I’m going to put the jersey in a picture frame. The match just ended and I’ve already received lots of messages from my friends in my cell phone. The gaffer wanted me to remain calm, for me to play the way I know how. Perhaps I was a bit more nervous than usual, but I’m leaving very happy with my debut. Everyone congratulated me in the dressing room and was happy for me and my debut.”
