The ‘rojiblanco’ players lament the loss but remain optimistic
Tiago: “I have no doubt that we can finish in Champions spots”
The ‘rojiblanco’ players appeared disappointed about the loss after the match against Espanyol. Filipe Luis and Tiago were the players in charge of appearing before the media and both agreed that they had let three very important points for the team’s goal escaped, but that the team has to move forward.
Filipe Luis was categorical. “We were better but they took advantage of their chances well. The referees can make mistakes but we lost because of mistakes we made. We were always behind on the scoreboard and when we levelled it seemed impossible that they’d score another goal. We have to keep working to make it to Champions spots, which is our goal. Three very important points got away from us. The gaffer really lives football and stood up for us. It’s our fault. The defeat isn’t the manager’s fault. We always support him. Now we have to think about Wednesday and keep working.”
Tiago Cardoso Mendes lamented the lost opportunity to jump up into the top spots in the table. “We had a home match to get into the spots up top and were unable to win. I think that we played well and with attitude, but we didn’t finish the chances that we had and ended up losing.” Despite the slip up, the Portuguese central midfielder assured that “I have no doubt that we can finish in Champions spots. We have a lot of league play left and right now we’re disappointed; we have to go away to play Levante and make up for the points that we lost against Espanyol. The only thing that Quique Sánchez Flores did was respond to provocation. The Espanyol players wanted to waste time every chance they got and that’s why the coach was angry the entire match.”
