The ‘rojiblanco’ players, happy about the win and thinking about beating Mallorca

Juanfran: 'I wanted to score to dedicate it to my father”

It was the slimmest of victories, but after the win over Hércules and the rest of results from the week, the ‘rojiblanco’ squad mathematically qualified to play in the Europa League next season. The Atlético players were unable to contain their joy. Álvaro Domínguez, who opened the scoring, analyzed the match and stated that “it was a very important goal. It’s the first one I’ve scored at the Calderón in front of our supporters. It’s a reward for all the hard work that I’ve done over the course of the year.”

The defender is already focused on the next match against Mallorca and explained that “they have a lot on the line and we have to go for the win. We want to finish in fifth or sixth place. If we win, I think that we can finish in one of those two spots.”

Jorge Pulido made his debut in the starting line-up and did so with a victory for his team. The young defender explained that “it was a dream debut in the presence of my family and I’m very happy about the win. I’d like to thank Quque for having put me in the starting eleven and I wish him luck on the new stage he’s about to embark upon. We’re pleased about the victory and we have to go to Mallorca to win in order to finish in fifth or sixth place.”

For his part, Juanfran, who was playing in his first game since his father passed away, said that “it would have been very special to score. I wanted to do so to dedicate a goal to my father, but it wasn’t meant to be. I still have many games left to play and I’ll surely be able to score goals to dedicate to him.”

Regarding his assessment of the match, the midfielder assured that “the team played very well in the first half, we had chances to have scored more goals, but we let up in the second half and their goal came. Fortunately, we were able to score the second and come away with the win.

“La Liga hasn’t ended, as we still have the match against Mallorca. We want to win it and try to finish in fifth or sixth place in order to avoid having to play the Europa League qualifier. Although the important thing was to qualify for Europe and we’ve achieved that,” Juanfran wrapped up.
