The ‘rojiblanco’ players appear delighted with the victory
Tiago: “The important thing was earning the win”
It was a hard-fought victory, but very important for Atlético de Madrid’s aspirations of qualifying for the next round of the Europa League. Tiago, who scored the match-winner, assured that “I’m very happy about the goal, but mainly for the victory, which was very important. The match became very difficult for us, as the Norwegian side played a very direct and very physical style. We had a tough time winning the ball from them and we did, we lost it quickly. We have two days till the derby and the truth is that we really want to get the win.”
Raúl García, midfielder for the ‘rojiblanco’ squad, explained his new position on the pitch and said that “I played in a position that’s not usually mine and I felt good. The important thing was helping the team and we earned three fundamental points.”
The Spaniard evaluated the victory and assured that “the win will boost the team’s morale heading into this Sunday’s match. Rosenborg hadn’t lost at home in two years, so that’s normal. They’re an opponent that applies lots of pressure and plays very physical football.
“Now we’re only thinking about the clash against Real Madrid. We want to win again to be up top against a rival that we really want to beat. With this victory we’ve achieved the goal we set for ourselves,” asserted Raúl García.
On his behalf, Antonio López returned to the starting line-up, and indicated that “it’s never easy to win in European competition. Our opponent was also playing and they were very physical. They play lots of long balls and we had a tough time, especially in the second half. In the end I’ll have to stick with the result. We’re still not qualified. We have to think about beating Aris at the Vicente Calderón. The victory was important for the team morale and in looking ahead to the encounter with Real Madrid. We showed once again that, without playing our best match, we can win.
“If everything goes our way we can beat Real Madrid. They play very well in their stadium, but we have to be confident of our chances,” Antonio López wrapped up.
