The players lament the final result, but are confident of reaching their goal

De Gea: 'If we continue to play like this, we'll surely finish up higher'

The ‘rojiblanco’ players lamented the draw because they took the lead twice on the scoreboard and in the end had to settle for a draw. De Gea and Perea agreed that the team played well and could jump up into European spots if they continue to play like that.

David de Gea highlighted that “we were unable to keep that one-goal lead and we suffered two setbacks, but I think that if we follow this line everything has to get better. Almería has a great squad and showed that. It’s not easy to win in their stadium”

Concerning his personal performance, he made some good saves. “Those are actions in which you are lucky to be able to make the save, but I’ll stick with the last goal they scored because it really hurt us. In the end we were unable to win, which is what we wanted. Nevertheless, we have to move forward and keep working. If we continue like this, we’ll surely finish up higher.”

The goalkeeper stated that “we have a hard time starting games well and we have to get stuck in and score before our opponent, as we did against Almería, and they try to keep them from scoring.

The draw leaves us wanting more because we always want to win and be in with the group above us. We have a complicated match on Saturday and we have to go for it all. We’re going to go out to win even though they’re a difficult opponent.”

Luis Amaranto Perea explained the second goal to the press. “The equalizer came off a cross from the side, practically taking away the three points from us. It has nothing to do with Godín; the cross arrived and Goitom and I went up for it. Unfortunately, the Almería player found the ball. When you make mistakes competing for a ball, there’s not much you can do. When you see that there were goals conceded, the defensive part always gets pointed out. Whenever we’re scored upon, it means that we’ve slipped up. Unfortunately, they shoot on our goal three times and score two goals. We could have increased our lead, but that didn’t happen.”

Now we have to think about Saturday’s derby. “We have one week to recharge our batteries and focus on winning the three points on Saturday.”

With respect to whether Atlético might feel the loss of these two points later, Perea said that “hopefully we won’t feel these and the team will be able to qualify for Europe, which is the goal we’ve set for ourselves. We let two important points get away but we’re still close. Everything is very tight and we hope that the teams above us don’t earn points.”
