The Madrid derby returns to the Copa del Rey

Atlético and Real Madrid will face off 17 years later

The main dish of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals will be the derby between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid. These two teams will face each other in the knockout tournament for the first time in 17 years. After Quique Sánchez Flores and Mourinho got their teams past Espanyol and Levante, respectively, the two squads will have a chance to again give a great show to their supporters.

The last time they matched up in the Cup was in the 1993/94 season, in the round of 16, and that ended with victory for Madrid after a two-two draw at the Bernabéu and winning 2-3 at Estadio Vicente Calderón.

In the quarterfinals, Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid have played each other five times, with a balance of three qualifications for the ‘blancos’ and two for the ‘colchoneros’. The only time that Atlético de Madrid has won in Cup play at the Santiago Bernabéu was in the final in 1992. The match ended 0-2 with goals from Schuster and Paolo Futre. The ‘rojiblancos’ will undoubtedly have a good chance to break the poor run of results at Madrid’s home stadium.
