The Atlético players lament the loss and begin to think about Racing

Costa: “We know that we’ll be there if we win; we have to keep fighting”

The Atlético de Madrid players were upset about the loss but are confident that they will get back on the winning track against Racing on Tuesday at El Sardinero. Godín, Ujfalusi and Diego Costa were the footballers in charge of appearing before the press in the mixed zone after the contest.

Diego Godín acknowledged that they paid dearly for the mistakes they made. “You have to be self-critical and recognize that we played poorly, made mistakes, and were facing a very serious team that planned a good game. Málaga were better and we didn’t play well anywhere. We knew that Málaga had dangerous players and you have to give them credit, although I’ll repeat that we’re self-critical and didn’t play a good game and didn’t deserve to win. Málaga were playing a final and we lacked that extra plus that we’d had in previous games,” he stated.

Atlético de Madrid have lost plenty of points at the Calderón this season. “When you lose, it’s because you did something wrong and your opponent did well. There are lots of things to correct, in defence, with the ball and without it. When you lose, it’s tough to look within and correct things. Now we have to pick our heads up and focus on the next match and try to continue the streak we had up till now,” he stated.

It was clear to Diego Costa that Atlético de Madrid were unrecognizable against Málaga because they weren’t the same team that had won the previous matches and had climbed into sixth place in the table. “The Atlético that we all know didn’t show up today. Málaga have a great side and you have to tip your hats to them. We have to think about the next game. We have our chances to make it to Europe and we know that by winning, we’ll get there. We have to keep fighting,” he said.

For his part, Tomas Ujfalusi was honest and categorical in front of the media. “In prior matches we hardly made any mistakes, played very well in defence and, this time, when we made errors, Málaga scored on us. It was a very good all-around game from Málaga. The difference with respect to other games is that they took advantage of our mistakes,” he asserted.

The Czech defender is already thinking about this Tuesday’s game against Racing at El Sardinero. “When you lose like that, the best thing is to forget about it. The next encounter is in three days, there are nine points left and we’re clear that we’re going for the nine points in play and can’t come out the way we did against Málaga. We have to get ready because the next fixture is crucial. What we did in other games was to control the ball, play well, switch the ball well and create chances. Today we lacked the aggressiveness and conviction needed. Málaga were better,” he stated.

The ‘rojiblanco’ footballer isn’t throwing in the towel in the battle to finish as high as possible in the table, commenting that “we all know that there are three teams there, fighting for the three spots. We want to hold them off, earn the nine points and finish as high as we can.”
