The Atleti players lament having to play in the Europa League qualifier

Mario: “We’re upset about not having achieved our goal”

Atlético de Madrid earned a clear win over Mallorca, but it wasn’t enough to avoid having to play in the Europa League play in round. The ‘rojiblanco’ players regretted the poor luck they’ve had. Mario Suárez admitted that “we’re upset for not having achieved the goal we’d set for ourselves. We took the pitch more relaxed when we had the lead, and were paying attention to what was going on in the other games. At least Mallorca saved themselves,” stated the midfielder who spent last season on the island.

As regards the season he had personally, Mario assured that “I started off bad, but at least I ended up playing. I hope that it’s the push we need for next season. As a group, we were inconsistent. Next year we have to get back to fighting for Champions League.”

For his part, Juanfran, who scored his first goal with Atlético, said that “a long time has passed since my arrival, three months, and I hadn’t been able to score. It was very emotional for me, as I was able to dedicate it to my father. As for next year, I’m going to work as hard as I can to be an uncontested starter. I hope that the Club works hard to bring the people we need to finish higher next season.”

Finally, David De Gea explained that “it was a bittersweet victory, as we were unable to avoid the play-in round. When you depend on other results, you already know that it’s not just about him winning but rather waiting for your rivals to slip up. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.”
