Atleti begin the 2026/27 Champions League campaign at one of European football's most iconic stadiums, Anfield, where we will face Liverpool this Wednesday at 21:00 CEST.
Despite suffering a 3-0 defeat to Athletic Club at San Mamés in our most recent LaLiga outing, our team will be looking to make a positive start to our Champions League campaign at a stadium where we have played several times in recent years. In fact, last season we also began our European campaign at Anfield. On that occasion, the hosts secured a 3-2 victory thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Van Dijk, despite a brace from Llorente. It was the second time our midfielder had scored twice at Liverpool's ground. The first, etched in the memory of every Atlético supporter, came in the second leg of the 2019/20 round of 16, when his two goals, along with one from Morata, secured an epic victory and sent us through to the next round.
Overall the two sides have met nine times in competitive competition, with Atleti having recorded three wins, two draws and four defeats.
Liverpool, meanwhile, come into the game unbeaten and fresh from their first victory of the season, a 2-0 away win against Ipswich thanks to a brace from Isak. The result leaves Iraola's side sixth in the Premier League with five points from their opening three matches.
