Eleven Academy players participate in first team pre-season
Eleven players from our Academy are training with Simeone’s squad during the 2019/2020 pre-season.
Following the strong performances from our youth teams in the 2018/2019 season, 11 players from our Academy are participate in this summer’s pre-season with our first squad.
Since Simeone became our first team coach, 27 Academy players have made their first team debuts, six of them last season.
MIGUEL SAN ROMÁN (14/07/1997) |
The goalkeeper from Benidorm, Spain joined our Academy in 2011 and has never stopped growing ever since. He has established himself as a key player at Atlético de Madrid B, which he captains. Last season, the team reached the Segunda División promotion playoffs. San Román has been called up by Simeone several times. |

FRANCISCO JAVIER MONTERO (14/01/1999) |
The centre-back from Seville made his official first team debut during the Copa del Rey Round of 32 first leg against San Andreu on Oct. 30, 2018. The defender played the full game against the Catalan side, and in the following months he did the same in LaLiga and the Champions League. The Spaniard played 14 official first team games last season, seven of which as a starter. Montero made Fútbol Draft’s Team of the Year, which recognises the best young talents in Spanish football. |
MANUEL SÁNCHEZ (24/08/2000) |
The left-back played for our Juvenil A side last season, although he was regularly called up by Atlético de Madrid B in the final months of the competition. Manu Sánchez was called up by Simeone for the Levante-Atleti game and made his debut in the friendly match against Beitar Jerusalem. |
ANDRÉS SOLANO (24/02/1998) |
The Colombian was a starter in our first team’s home match against Leganés on Mar. 9. The full-back had already been a part of Simeone’s pre-season squad in summer 2018. “I’m very excited to have made my debut in front of these fans, at this stadium, at this club,” Solano said after the game. |

The midfielder arrived at our club from Mallorca in 2013. Since then, the Spaniard has frequently made his way into Simeone’s squad lists. Moya was nominated for the 2018 Golden Boy a few months after making his official first team debut. |
RODRIGO RIQUELME (02/04/2000) |
The attacking midfielder joined our Academy in 2010. Last season, he was a part of Juvenil A’s squad, and was called up for an official first team game. Roro plays for the Spain U17 team. |
CARLOS ISAAC MUÑOZ OBEJERO (30/03/1998) |
The Spaniard joined our Juvenil A team in 2015. He made his first team debut in March 2018, during a home game against Deportivo. Last season, he was a starter against Huesca at the Wanda Metropolitano on LaLiga Matchday 6. |
SERGIO CAMELLO (10/02/2001) |
The striker from Madrid, who joined our club in 2009 at age eight, is the latest Academy player to have made his first team debut. He did so during last season’s LaLiga clash against Levante on May 18. The Spaniard came on after the break and scored the equaliser in the 79th minute, thus becoming our first goalscorer born in the 21st century. |
BORJA GARCÉS (06/08/1999) |
The striker from Melilla, who joined our Academy in 2016, made his official first team debut on Sep. 15 against Eibar. The Spaniard came on for Rodrigo in the 71st minute and scored the equaliser in stoppage time as the Wanda Metropolitano erupted. Garcés had already played with the first team in the friendly games against Nigeria and Cagliari, scoring in both matches. The striker signed a contract extension until 2022 in January. |
