Suárez brace inspires Atleti to home win over Elche
Our team beat Elche 3-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday. Suárez netted a brace and Costa scored from the penalty spot.
Atleti earned a 3-1 home win against Elche on Saturday thanks to a brace from Suárez and a Costa goal.
The referee awarded us a penalty very early on as Suárez was tripped inside the box, but VAR overturned the decision due to a previous offside position. Llorente had the first shot on target, which was answered with an unorthodox save by the keeper. After a few chances, we found the breakthrough in the final minutes of the first half as Suárez subtly made contact with a cross from Trippier and the ball ended in the back of the net. It was the Englishman’s fourth assist in the current LaLiga season. Llorente almost doubled our lead shortly thereafter after a fantastic pass from Joao Félix, but the Spaniard was off target.
Suárez doubled our lead after the break with his second goal of the day. Carrasco provided an exceptional assist. However, Elche pulled one back not long after, and Simeone made a double substitution as Saúl and Correa came on for Carrasco and Lemar. Joao Félix and Suárez made way for Kondogbia and Costa – who returned to action – not long after… and the striker wasted no time before making an impact. He was brought down inside the box and converted the penalty to restore our two-goal lead. The game ultimately ended 3-1 as Atleti picked up another three important points.
