Simeone reaches 500 LaLiga matches

With the match against Mallorca, Diego Pablo Simeone makes history among the managers who have taken charge of the most games in LaLiga history.

Diego Pablo Simeone arrived at the club in December 2011, replacing Gregorio Manzano. He made his debut at La Rosaleda against Málaga in January 2012, introducing his philosophy of taking it game by game and reviving the iconic phrase of another red-and-white legend, Luis Aragonés: “win, win, win, and win again.” And that’s exactly what he has done since arriving at Atlético: win matches and win trophies. First came the Europa League in 2012 against Athletic (3-0), followed by the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea (4-1). Then came the Copa del Rey in 2013 against Real Madrid (2-1), LaLiga in 2014, and the Spanish Super Cup in 2014 against Real Madrid (1-1 and 1-0).

He continued with another Europa League title in 2018 against Olympique de Marseille in Lyon (3-0), another UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid in Tallinn (4-2), and another LaLiga title in 2021, which was played without fans in the stadiums due to the pandemic. These eight titles mark his career as a red-and-white manager, surpassing all previous managers in the club’s 122-year history.

Simeone is the ninth LaLiga manager to reach 500 matches, joining illustrious names such as Luis Aragonés, Javier Irureta, Miguel Muñoz, Víctor Fernández, Javier Clemente, Joaquín Caparrós, Ernesto Valverde, and Manuel Pellegrini.

Simeone’s record is staggering, having achieved 305 wins, 112 draws, and 82 losses in the 499 matches played to date while managing Atlético Madrid. In the current campaign, Simeone’s team has won 13 LaLiga matches, with 6 draws and only two defeats.
