Quique S. Flores: 'We’re happy about the win and we dedicate it to the fans”

“We made a huge effort with a good attitude, good football and lots of chances”

The manager of Atlético de Madrid, Quique Sánchez Flores, appeared satisfied with his team’s game against Villarreal because of the attitude shown by his players on the pitch. “We’re very happy, pleased, and dedicate it to the supporters, who were spectacular from the opening minute, just like in other matches that we didn’t win, but in which we tried. We made a huge effort with a good attitude, good performance, good football, and lots of chances. Beating Villarreal is very tough,” he stated.

The ‘rojiblanco’ head coach congratulated the fact that his team was able to motivate its fans, as they never stopped cheering for the team despite the recent run of negative results. “We attacked in the first half like in other games, and we went into the half with similar sensations to the ones against Sevilla or Valencia, but with the feeling that we were playing better, that we had more control of the situation and that was a guarantee for the second half. We got our fans excited, we’re going to give them a good weekend and hopefully we’re capable of giving them a great end to the season,” he stated.

Quique further highlighted the importance of his “hallmark players” having such a solid game. “We want the best for everyone, but there are players who are reference points. Therefore, everything will be better when they’re playing well, and we know how big goals are for Kun and Forlán. We’re going to make a maximum effort; today we asked them to get closer to the group and for the group to support them. As a team is the only way that we can accomplish our goals,” he assured.

“Villarreal is enough motivation in itself, but we as a team have the obligation of motivating ourselves. I’ve always said that mental states sometimes play a big influence because there’s a lot of pressure in the world of football. When a team doesn’t win it causes lots of doubts. I’m really happy because this team needed something like this and needed to show itself that they’re a great team and great players who form a good group. I, as a manager, have no doubts. With respect to the matches, I wasn’t satisfied for a while. Recently, I’ve had good feelings about things in the last three or four games and I think that we can get the team producing coherent results with respect to our goal,” he argued.

The ‘colchonero’ head coach also commented on the solid performance of Elías against Villarreal in spite of being in a period of adaptation. “I’m very happy for him; I’ve had several conversations with Elías and he acknowledges that Spanish football has a different rhythm than Brazilian and he’s working on it. He’s in a type of football that is tough to adapt to and is making a big effort,” he concluded.
