Quique S. Flores: 'It’s important to trim points and be in the group at the head”

“It’s tough to leave Diego Forlán on the bench”

Quique Sánchez Flores admitted that it was a positive week, since Atlético de Madrid’s direct rivals didn’t earn the three points and his team did. “We were hoping for a week like this, but the main thing was that we earned the three points. It was important to trim points and be in the group chasing the spots that give the right to play in Europe. We’re going to try and finish as high as we can,” acknowledged the head coach.

The manager of the ‘rojiblanco’ side praised the team’s path in the last few weeks and stated that “in the last seven games, with the exception of the match against Real Madrid, the team has earned points each time out and shown that it’s not a coincidence. We beat Real Sociedad, a serious and complicated team.”

With respect to the fact that Diego Forlán began the game as a substitute, Quique assured that “it’s tough to leave him on the bench. We have a very good relationship and we know what he means to the team. This time it was a teammates’ turn. I expect Forlán not to drop his play when it’s time for him to go. He has to keep working the same as he has up till now.”

Concerning his future at the helm of the squad, Quique explained that “the players know me and know that I still haven’t spoken about my future on the bench. Neither the club nor myself will speak before the end of the season regarding my continuity with the team. We all have to look out for the good of the club.”
