Quique Flores: “Diego knows how to play well against this type of opponent”

The coach appeared very pleased with his team’s work

Quique Sánchez Flores was unable to hide his joy after breaking the poor ‘rojiblanco’ run at the Reyno de Navarra. The manager broke down the match and said that “we planned a very aggressive match up front, and it went well. We wanted to play as far away from our goal as we could and we achieved that. We staved off the first wave from Osasuna and then we imposed our style.”

The head coach continued to analyze the development of the contest and said that “when we were up 1-3 we shouldn’t have suffered, but we had an absurd penalty, and we know what that means in Pamplona. You can never relax until the referee blows the final whistle.”

The Atlético de Madrid gaffer also had time to speak about the central figure of the game, Diego Costa, who tallied all three goals. “Against these battle-hardened opponents, Diego knows how to play well. He holds them off and when he takes off he’s stronger than his defenders. Everything pointed to it being an encounter like this. He exceeded the expectations we had for him both in goals and actions. He did more than we thought he would.”

Furthermore, the ‘rojiblanco’ manager stated that “except for against Madrid, we didn’t deserve to lose; we had come off of 5 games unbeaten. The team is aggressive and has a strong desire. They kept that line. The players want to finish the season in European spots and you can see that.”
