Atleti earned a fantastic Champions League win at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday against Juventus. Giménez and Godín got the goals to give us a two-goal lead for the return leg in Italy.
The Wanda Metropolitano was electric and it contributed to a very intense start to the game. Both teams had chances in the first minutes of the match, and our stadium roared every time our team got close to Juventus' goal.
After around half an hour, we were originally awarded a penalty as Diego Costa was brought down. But the play was reviewed by VAR and the foul was deemed outside the box.
The rhythm of the game decayed slightly in the dying minutes of the first half, and both teams headed back to the changing room for the break with the score tied at 0-0.
There were no substitutions at half-time. Our team had a fantastic chance very early on as Diego Costa was sent through on goal, but his shot went wide. We had another clear chance right way: Griezmann lobbed the keeper, who got his fingertips to it and the ball ended up hitting the crossbar. We were extremely unlucky not to take the lead on both occasions.Simeone moved things around shortly thereafter, as Morata, Lemar and Correa came on for Costa, Thomas and Koke. All substitutions were made inside the first 65 minutes. Five minutes later, we were unlucky once again. Morata scored a fantastic goal but the referee, after consulting VAR, disallowed it for an alleged foul on the defender. Those were tough calls... But then the Wanda Metropolitano exploded. First Giménez and then Godín scored two goals to send all the Atléticos into delirium and give us a two-goal lead for the return leg.
