New Anfield battle awaits

Atleti prepare for a massive European clash at Anfield as we take on Liverpool at 9pm CET on Wednesday.

Atleti gear up for a massive European clash at Anfield as we take on Liverpool at 9pm CET on Wednesday. Simeone’s men will look to earn all three points after the disappointment of the reverse fixture.

The Atleti fans have fond memories of Anfield, where we’ve played three times and always earned positive results. The first was in the 2008/09 Champions League group stage – drawing 1-1. Although we lost 2-1 in the 2009/10 Europa League semifinals, Forlán’s extra-time goal sent us to the final – which we went on to win in Hamburg. The third time was in March 2020, when we won 3-2 to qualify for the Champions League quarterfinals thanks to Llorente’s brace and a goal from Morata. It was an epic game – and the last before the pandemic.

This will therefore be the fourth time we play at Anfield. Our team will look to earn the second group stage win, following our 2-1 success at AC Milan, although we’ll have to do so without Griezmann, who’s suspended after being sent off in the reverse fixture.

Liverpool are the group leaders with nine points – having won all their games – while Atleti are second with four. FC Porto are third and have also picked up four points, whereas AC Milan are fourth and yet to earn a point.

Jürgen Klopp’s side drew 2-2 against Brighton at the weekend, whereas our team beat Betis 3-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano thanks to the goals from Carrasco, Pezzella (own goal) and Joao Félix.
